Bandwidth

Broadband telecommunications

As one of the UK's foremost high-technology hotspots, we recognise in York & North Yorkshire that you will need all the bandwidth you can get, with the reassurance that more will be available as technology advances. In June 2003 BT announced that broadband communications had accelerated faster in York than almost anywhere in the UK.

Broadband has spread out to surrounding areas. Almost the entire county and all major business locations are now online with over 99% coverage of the county.

Scaleable broadband on demand at the IT Centre

The IT Centre on York Science Park provides 100Mb link which can be opened up for tenants to use on a day-to-day basis. For example a company may want 2Mb as standard but occasionally to scale that up to 10Mb for larger pieces of work.

Fibre provision

For many years now, York has been laying fibre-optic cables beneath its ancient streets, and can now justifiably claim to have one of the most comprehensive fibre networks of any city in the UK.

Some of the main business parks are designated as BT eLocations and have dual-fibre provision, for the ultimate in peace of mind. Fibre offers a synchronous connection meaning total reliability of speed and connection for each user.

York can also offer a range of possible fibre providers, including BT (which has its Northern headquarters in York), Fibernet, York Data Services, and NTL.
