Lord Mayor of York launches a new 'York Design Award'
The Rt. Hon Lord Mayor of York, Cllr. Janet Hopton has launched a new annual Award to recognise good, distinctive design of buildings and developments in the City.
The York Design Award aims to encourage high standards of design and takes into consideration issues such as sustainability, landscaping, lay-out and context. It is open to all new build, including domestic and residential, commercial and community, and conservation, conversion and landscape developments within the City of York Council boundary, completed between 1st January 2004 and 31st December 2006. Cllr. Janet Hopton has been involved with planning for the last seven years while she has been on the Council. She wanted to launch this annual Award during her year of office. She explains, "York and its surrounding villages have a lovely heritage and some very fine buildings. I feel very strongly that we all have a duty to contribute to this and see design as being fundamental in ensuring that schemes are of the highest quality, and still in keeping with their surroundings. I hope that the Award will encourage all those responsible for new buildings to contribute to York's future heritage by recognising and striving for good design."
The Award will be judged by an independent panel with expertise in architecture, planning, sustainability and conservation. The Award has been launched with the help of a partnership of York-based professionals including the York Civic Trust, English Heritage, the City of York Council, York Professional Initiative, and local Architects.
An application form and further details are available from the Civic Services Officer, Tel: 01904 551011 or email:civicenquiries [at] york.gov.uk. The closing date for applications is 17 February 2007. Winners of each category and the overall Award winner will be announced on 31 March 2007. An Award ceremony will take place at the Mansion House after Easter.
