Bulgarian Ambassador Meets Business Leaders in York and North Yorkshire

The Bulgarian Ambassador to Great Britain, His Excellency Lachezar Matev, paid a special visit to York yesterday where he, his wife Bisserka and daughter Emily were invited to a Civic Reception at The Mansion House and were then treated to a real 'overview' of the City as they enjoyed a trip on The Yorkshire Wheel.

Welcomed to the City by the Lord Mayor of York Councillor Janet Hopton and the Lord Mayor's Consort David Hopton, the Ambassador was also introduced to the york-england.com Vice Chairman Peter Wilkinson and Chief Executive Denise Dodd. York-england.com, the inward investment agency for York and North Yorkshire, was keen to speak with the Ambassador about strengthening business links between the region and Bulgaria and also to show him the wide range of development and business growth that is happening in the area.

Originally invited to the region by Scarborough businessman Don Robinson, who has a number of leisure-based business interests in Bulgaria, york-england.com took the opportunity to make arrangements for the Ambassador to be introduced to a wide range of business leaders and representatives during his visit. As well as his visit to York the Ambassador has also met with representatives from the Leeds City Council International Business Team including the Leader of Leeds City Council, Councillor Mark Harris and Jeremy Coupland, International Operations Manager of Yorkshire Forward. On Tuesday he is also due to meet the Mayor of Scarborough, Councillor Herbert Tindall, Nick Taylor of Renaissance and David Jeffles, Chairman of the British Tourist Resorts Association.

Denise Dodd Chief Executive, york-england.com said: "This has been a great opportunity to showcase what York and North Yorkshire has on offer to the international business community and to learn more about the activity and development that is happening in Bulgaria.

Bulgaria has seen significant changes in recent years and is developing rapidly both in terms of business and tourism opportunities - over 5000 Yorkshire people alone now own property there. We hope he enjoyed the visit to York and the region as a whole and look forward to developing further our business links with Bulgaria in the future."

Theresa Lindsay, Head of Inward Investment and Marketing for Yorkshire Forward said: "The Bulgarian Ambassador's visit to Yorkshire has provided us with an opportunity to demonstrate the businesses strengths of the region, and take the first steps towards establishing stronger working relationships between our businesses and Bulgaria."
