Ripon based firm helping the global market see perfectly

With the help of Business Link York and North Yorkshire a Ripon based firm, Coronet Medical Technology Ltd, is set to take the world of eye surgery by storm with a new surgical technique.

The new, innovative technique specifically used in corneal graft surgery will potentially offer blind patients the ability to see perfectly.  Using the exceptional surgical blade technology already established by Coronet, the firm is looking to develop a new surgical technique, which will improve and streamline the current practice within corneal graft surgery.

With the help of Business Link, Coronet has secured £75,000 of research funding to undertake a 12-month feasibility study to evaluate every aspect of the new surgical technique.

Stuart Fuller, Business Link York and North Yorkshire adviser, says, “Coronet is at a really exciting stage in its development.  This new technique could revolutionise corneal graft surgery, but because of the intricate procedures involved in eye surgery, it was essential to carry out an extensive programme of complex testing.  Accessing the funding will allow Coronet to carry out the necessary research to progress to the next stage.”

The research programme is scheduled to be completed in February 2008, and if the technique proves viable Coronet will embark on the development stage, with Business Link’s support.

Philip Weston, a director at Coronet Medical Technology Ltd says, “In comparison to some of the large global medical companies, we are a small fish in a big pond.  Our innovative surgical technique could revolutionise corneal graft surgery and offer this niche, specialised market a real alternative to current methods.

“This is a real challenge for us and we will be working closely with Business Link at each step, through development, exporting to a global market and expanding our business further.”
