York Wins Again…York Voted Best UK City!

York has been crowned ‘The UK’s Best City’, at the prestigious annual Telegraph Travel Awards.  These awards highlight the best that travel can offer and emerge from the biggest independent survey in the UK of the British travelling public.

Some 30,000 readers of the Daily Telegraph are questioned on their travel habits – not just on where and how they like to travel, but on their attitudes to domestic trips and the welcome and service they receive.

The awards were held on Thursday 29th November during the annual ABTA (Association of British Travel Agents) convention in Tenerife at the stunning Magma Convention Centre in Costa Adeje.  The prestigious ceremony was compered by the Daily Telegraph Travel Editor Graham Boynton.

Kay Hyde, PR Manager for York Tourism Bureau travelled to the convention to accept the award on behalf of the city.  Kay said, ‘We’re grateful to all our visitors and readers of the Daily Telegraph who have given York a huge vote of confidence.  The awards ceremony is attended by very important players in the travel industry and the UK’s top travel journalists who have all applauded York’s win.

In my role as Public Relations Manager this has also been a fantastic opportunity to network with Britain’s top travel journalists and ensure York’s profile remains strong.  This couldn’t be a better end to our tourism year and we look forward to building on this success in 2008.’

This is not the first time York has been named as the UK’s favourite city in the Telegraph Awards - York took the title from London in 2004, after a six year run at the top.  And  this award also comes hot on the heals of a win in Europe where York gained the accolade, European Tourism City of the Year.

Gillian Cruddas, Chief Executive of York Tourism Bureau said, ‘This just goes to show you don’t have to be big to be best.  But for a small city we still pack a strong punch.  With over thirty attractions to visit and a wealth more to explore on York’s doorstep – the Yorkshire Moors and Dales, Scarborough and Whitby – as well as distinctive shops and award winning restaurants, a visitor could stay for a week and still only scratch the surface of what there is to discover here.  We’re thrilled with this win and it’s a huge accolade to everyone involved in tourism in York, from taxi drivers to top tourist attractions, from residents - for the friendly welcome they offer, to our first class hoteliers.  We’d like to congratulate everyone involved in tourism in York for helping to make this happen.’

As a result of the Travel Awards the Telegraph will be producing a 24 page stand alone newsprint tabloid supplement on the 8th December, highlighting York and the other travel industry winners.

The ABTA Travel Convention attracts an unprecedented line up of senior travel industry professionals, offering talks and workshops for attendees to learn more about the industry’s hottest topics such as sustainable tourism and offering powerful insights into the future of the travel industry.

ABTA is the essential event in the tourism calendar for anyone looking to grow their travel business.  The convention business sessions have a sharp industry focus with Panorama anchor and BBC Radio 2 broadcaster Jeremy Vine brining his incision and wit to interview and panel discussions alike.
