New Skills Coordinator at Science City York
The latest appointment by one of the region’s leading promoters of technology and innovation drives forward the bid to address current skill shortages in business and enterprise.
Recently appointed Science City York Skills Coordinator Denis Ormston brings to the new role over seven years experience of working in training and education, focussed on facilitating the provision of business coach mentoring and personal & business skills development support and guidance to start up, micro and SME’s across the creative industries, IT & digital, manufacturing, finance, health and transport sectors.
He has worked closely with business and learning partnerships, HE and FE colleges, private training providers and local authorities to identify skills gaps and find training solutions to meet both business and individual skills development needs.
Amongst Denis’ first tasks at Science City York will be to survey and establish current skills development needs and identify skills shortages within the bioscience, creative and IT sectors.
He is also undertaking an extensive evaluation of training options currently available within the York and North Yorkshire region and is keen to work with local educational institutions and specialist training providers to supply innovative skills initiatives.
Denis comments ‘Whilst it is clear that generic skills such as entrepreneurship, leadership and management, team building and motivation, practical marketing and advanced IT remain high on the skills agenda, sector specific and ‘soft’ skills needs must be identified and addressed to provide both quality management and a quality workforce for the future.’
He continues ‘Our intention is to promote an on-line, one stop databank facility for the benefit of sector members and businesses seeking information on options available to develop the skills levels within their organisation to meet future needs. It is also hoped that individuals seeking information and guidance on appropriate courses and training options will access this databank and establish their career paths in these fast growing business sectors.’
