Ex-Banker Chooses Escrick Business Park for Growing Childcare Business
Monday 6th April 2009
Despite the credit crunch, building a new business is proving childs play for a former York bank manager.
Ruth Dowswell, MD of Young Discoverers Ltd, has picked up the keys for new premises at Escrick Business Park which will be home for her new day nursery for children aged 3 months to 5 years, and holiday club for 4-11 year olds. The move comes just six months after Ruth and her team set up a thriving before and after-school club in Escrick village.
Mother of two, Ruth, who promoted the cause of women entrepreneurs when she met the shadow leader of the House of Commons, Theresa May, recently, is passionate about good child care. With more women returning to work or extending their working hours, the need for accessible high-quality child care provision is absolutely vital, she says.
Young Discoverers is the latest business to move onto S Harrison Developments thriving business park on the A19 between York and Selby.
Says Phil Hill of Harrison: "Escrick Business Park is now fully completed and landscaped open and doing good business. The presence of a quality nursery on site is one more distinguishing feature to attract other occupiers to choose Escrick as the ideal location for their business."
Young Discoverers has taken a 1880 sq ft unit with its own garden area at the north eastern end of the site. Having successfully agreed a change of use with Selby District Council, Ruth and her team will use the upper floors to provide space for children up to two years old. The ground floor and secure garden area will house two- to five-year olds.
Already 23 children have been registered for when the facility opens shortly. In total, it can accommodate 51 children at any time.
"Quality of space, quality of care and quality of staff are the most important factors when people are looking to access child care," says Ruth.
"Im thrilled to have built around me so quickly a team of consummate professionals who can deliver the safe and stimulating environment kids need, while I make the most of my business skills to ensure the ventures success."
But, she adds, "location is an important factor too. Escrick Business Park provides the perfect dropping off point for commuters heading from Selby to York or York to Selby. The Harrison team assisted in ensuring we could consider the unit that best suited our needs as a day nursery, including the provision of an all important garden area where children can safely play and learn."
Experienced local child care professional Kathy Wainwright has already been appointed to head the team at the child care nursery which will open from 7.30am to 6pm five days each week for 51 weeks a year. Her deputy manager Joanne Jaskowski is also in post.
Young Discoverers recently gained OFSTED approval for its nearby pre- and after-school club and is currently registering for OFSTED approval at the day nursery.
