Utilising graduates' talent

Friday 14th August 2009

The University of York's Student Internship Bureau (SIB) offers employers a fantastic opportunity to engage the services of the University's enthusiastic, motivated and highly educated students or recent graduates to help you address real projects within your organisation in a cost-effective and flexible way. Typical projects may focus on market research, developing or implementing new systems, benchmarking exercises, designing IT or web solutions or reorganising records to enable better customer service. A range of paid placement and internship options are available, including:

  • Graduate Internships: A 12-week project-based placement for a 2008/9 York graduate which aims to stretch the graduate and add value to your business. A generous subsidy is available for this scheme, meaning that the cost to the business for the internship amounts to £1200 inclusive of tax and national insurance. This scheme is available throughout the year.  Due to funding restrictions, this scheme is restricted to one graduate per organisation.
  • Term time internships: This scheme is output based, designed around a specific project. Students are permitted to work up to 16 hours per week during term time; dependent on their timetable and your requirements, students can therefore spend between one to two days per week working for your business. This scheme is available throughout the year and is not subject to tax or national insurance.
  • Summer internships/Vacation internships: A 6-12 week project-based work placement undertaken during the vacation period, typically over the Summer break. This scheme is open to students of all year groups and 2009 graduates.

For each of the above schemes, the SIB will do the following:

  • Help you define a realistic but challenging project that will achieve tangible results for your business
  • Advertise your project free of charge on our interactive Careers website, which our 11,000 students have access to. Personally match and shortlist the most appropriate students for your final selection
  • Keep the administration and costs of supporting the project as light as possible.
