York St John University’s gardeners have achieved Gold Medal Award status at this year’s Yorkshire in Bloom competition announced in September.
The University’s Lord Mayor’s Walk campus, which was up against a number of the region’s educational institutions, also picked up the prestigious ‘Best in the Category of Universities, Colleges and Further Education Establishments’.
On accepting the award the judging panel praised the high standards of cleanliness, sustainability and maintenance that describe York St John’s garden areas.
Rob Scott, head gardener at York St John University, said: “I’m privileged to have the position of head gardener at York St John University and it gives me immense pride to manage a team of gardeners who are as dedicated to caring for the outstanding grounds we have. In addition to winning a gold award, achieving ‘Best In Category’ bowled me over. It’s a credit to every member of the team for all their hard work.”
The award was accepted with pride after picking up a Yorkshire Rose Silver Gilt Award in the Yorkshire in Bloom competition last year. Yorkshire in Bloom is a voluntary regional organisation that administers the Britain in Bloom Campaign in the region. Special categories include public, private and charitable establishments, business premises, visitor attractions, caravan and camping sites, youth environmental projects and further education establishments.
