University launches new Centre for Modern Studies

A new research centre at the University of York will be launched with a lecture by a leading American academic.
Professor Kate Flint, from Rutgers University in the United States, is an award-winning researcher whose work brings together literary studies, cultural history, and the history of art.
She will give the inaugural lecture Flashes of Violence: Photography, Shock, and Modernity at the launch of the University of York’s Centre for Modern Studies on 21 October.
The Centre, housed in the University’s new Berrick Saul Building, will bring together academics from different disciplines who share research interests in the period from 1850 to the current day.
Professor David Peters Corbett, director of the Centre for Modern Studies, said: “Academics looking at this period might do so from an artistic, historic, or literary perspective but they share common themes and bringing them together will open up exciting new avenues for research.
“As someone whose academic background ranges across art, literature and culture, Professor Flint embodies the Centre’s aims and so is the ideal person to mark its opening.”
The Centre’s initial research will focus on three strands; globalisation, innovation and narrative but this is expected to broaden over time. It will host a range of lectures, symposia and conferences and the development of a Masters degree to be offered by the Centre is also underway.
Professor Flint’s lecture is open to the public and will begin at 6pm in the Bowland Auditorium in the Berrick Saul Building.
