Clean Green Energy

If you have plans to create energy from waste or biomass, or convert waste into something valuable, then North Yorkshire welcomes you. With an excellent biomass supply structure, a strong food processing industry, a supportive public sector and a high level of University involvement, it takes the hassle out of developing your business.

Supply Chain

A strong biomass supply chain is being developed to support the major power stations, especially Drax and the bio-refineries on the Humber estuary. The major food processing plants in the area, such as Grampian foods, have significant waste streams that they need to dispose of without polluting the environment.

Locations

Selby district has some unique features and a refreshing attitude to clean energy. With the ending of the Selby mine there are a number of sites with excellent connections to the National Grid, enabling low cost connections for green energy producers. Other areas of North Yorkshire such as Scarborough, Ryedale and Hambleton all have pioneering developments actively underway, including aerobic digestion, pyrolysis, and clean combustion.

University Support

The University of York is actively involved in environmental work, focusing on the practical areas of processing waste material to produce predictable fuel, and the treatment of flue gases. They are also involved in bio-refineries as is the National Non Foods Crop Centre, also based at the University. Leeds and Sheffield Universities are also involved in pollution minimisation.

Positive RDA

Yorkshire Forward, as well as establishing an overall strategy that calls for ‘an extensive regional bio-energy infrastructure that includes the widespread production and use of biomass and biofuels’, have also established two key agencies, Recycling Action Yorkshire and Future Energy Yorkshire. These two organisations actively assist the development of new technologies and businesses involved in clean green energy, providing financial support in appropriate cases.
